In the beginning

Dating back over 500 years, Zermatt was, for most of its history, just a tiny hamlet. But in the 1800s, its dramatic location caught the interest of mountaineers who came to conquer its gigantic peaks. This really put Zermatt on the map. Since then Zermatt has continued to be a place where legends are made. This colourful history is written into its people and its landscape. You’ll find it in the village’s cobbled streets and ancient barns sandwiched between modern buildings, you’ll see it in the weathered faces of the locals. History is everywhere in Zermatt.

Zermatt has always been car-free. Today horses and carriages have mostly been replaced by very efficient e-taxis, e-buses, and e-bikes but walking is still the most popular means of getting around here. Keep your wits about you though, these electric machines are noiseless, and can creep up on you, but don’t worry pedestrians have the right of way. Clean mountain air and a slow pace of living are well worth the occasional surprise. You’ll see renewable energy being used across Zermatt and its fully deserving of its title as the most sustainable ski resort in Switzerland.
